Bryant Hornet Engineering - 2015 State Champions

Bryant Hornet Engineering teams celebrate unprecedented win

Saturday, Bryant Hornet Engineering carried five teams (three high school and two middle school) to the 2015 VEX Robotics State Championship. The event was bigger than ever with 45 teams and the strongest competition yet seen in Arkansas.

All BHE teams performed well throughout qualification rounds, with BHS team 5691B landing the number one spot. 5691B then chose fellow high school team, 5691W, and BMS team 1338B as its alliance partners. The three Bryant teams then fought their way through the elimination bracket, setting new state scoring records in the process. Ultimately, Bryant Hornet Engineering landed on top - winning three Tournament Champion Awards.

In addition to the Tournament Champion Awards, BHS team 5691B won the Design Award and conquered all in the Robot Skills Challenge, setting yet another state record. BMS team 1338G brought home the Judges Award.

This was the biggest win yet for Bryant Hornet Engineering, and clears the way for Bryant to represent Arkansas at the VEX Robotics World Championship for the third year in a row. These students have clearly learned how to "make it happen."

VEX World Championship Online Challenge Finalists

For the first time in the team's history, Bryant Hornet Engineering has entered the VEX Robotics World Championship Online Challenges and has been elected as a finalist in three categories! (See the full list of finalists for all categories HERE.)

Monticello VEX Tournament
Hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Saturday's tournament landed perfectly in a window of suitable weather and everyone who made it had a great time. Bryant Hornet Engineering showed up with a very small crew and a single robot wearing 5691X plates(qualifying the team for the Arkansas State Championship). The recently/hastily modified robot went undefeated through qualification rounds as well as elimination rounds, winning Tournament Champion and Team Organization/Coordination awards. The upgraded robot and small crew also managed to land a new Arkansas record in the Robot Skills event.
Congratulations to all the teams that competed and a special thank you goes out to the hosts of this great event.

BHE Hosts VEX Competition

We didn't get snowed out this year! Bryant Hornet Engineering hosted 25 teams at its first VEX Robotics Tournament Saturday morning. Jason Price (BMS) did great work in organizing the event and everyone had a great time. BHE teams performed well, with 5691B winning Tournament Champion and Design awards. Bryant Middle School's 1338G finished as finalist in elimination rounds, only beaten out by another Bryant team. Both of these Bryant teams were allied with Southwest teams (that finished 1, 2, and 3 in qualifying rounds). Great work!

Let's try this again... We were snowed out last year. We're hoping for better weather this year.

Mk III Cannon Earns its Designation
The largest of Hornet Engineering's air-cannons has reached a significant milestone - the cannon has been fired wirelessly by a VEX Cortex micro-controller. A pair of relays in the cannon's control panel allow the 7-volt VEX unit to close an 18-volt circuit, engage the solenoid in each barrel's valve, and fire the cannon. This cannon was constructed with this purpose in mind, and this isn't the last stop for the BHE's Artillery program, either. Using the now discontinued VEX ARM9 micro-controller, the cannon is short steps away from being triggered from a cell phone, over GSM networks, over the internet, and ultimately a local area network; allowing the cannon to be fired from, literally, anywhere on the planet... and the Mk IV may not be far behind.

Hornet Engineering Hits Texas

Hornet Engineering's first Create Award

This weekend, a para-unit of Hornet Engineering dropped into VEX Robotics Competition in Greenville, TX. BHE saw this as an opportunity to see and compete with some of the country's top teams. Several teams attending the competition are internationally ranked in VEX Robotics Robot Skills and Programming Skills competition. Outside of the World Championships, this is the largest competition Hornet Engineering has attended. 70 high school and middle school teams were in attendance.

The small crew, made up of Harshdeep "Sunny" Uppal (Junior - Driver), Sarah Anderson (Junior - Spotter/Coach), and Joe Sartini (Sophmore - Programmer), did fantastic work in keeping up with the strong competition; landing in 7th at the end of qualifying rounds. The team formed a strong alliance, advanced to quarter finals of elimination rounds, and won Bryant Hornet Engineering's first Create Award.

Architectural Tours and Excellence Award Winners

Bryant Hornet Engineering's H.E.A.T. chapters (Bryant High and Bryant Middle) sent four VEX Robotics teams to the Springdale VEX Competition this weekend. Along the way, the group stopped for captivating tours of the University of Arkansas's Fay Jones School of Architecture and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. As our PLTW programs include studies in Architecture, we were thrilled to offer this opportunity to some of our top students.

BHS and BMS robotics teams celebrate a victory

On Saturday, our high school and middle school teams competed in their first VEX Robotics competition of the season. Team 5691B, Hornet Engineering - Blue, finished qualification rounds in first place and undefeated (the only undefeated robot of the day). Alliance mechanical failures and outright poor fortune knocked 5691B out of the semi-finals; but ultimately, the team's solid performance, engineering notebook, and exceptional interviews with judges about their engineering process earned the team the Excellence Award - the highest honor in VEX competition, awarded to the best all-round team. Not a bad day.

PLTW CEO & President, Dr. Vince Bertram, Visits Bryant Hornet Engineering
In a last minute change of plans, Dr. Vince Bertram and members of his staff made arrangements to visit Bryant High School and made their way to the Bryant Hornet Engineering Center. Engineering students had opportunity to show Dr. Bertram their latest projects and discuss future plans.

The Project Lead the Way CEO spoke at multiple venues in Little Rock on the importance of STEM education for our nation's future in the global economy. Bryant Hornet Engineering students and staff attended one of Dr. Bertram's speaking engagments at the Clinton School of Public Service on Monday night (See video above).

Mk III Cannon Revealed
Bryant Hornet Engineering's Skunkworks division has released its latest addition to the arsenal with the first of a new generation of air cannons. The defining characteristic of the third generation (Mk III) is the capability to be fired via 802.11g wireless network signal (in addition to manual arming switches and triggers).

The new cannon dwarfs previous models with two complete barrel systems - each roughly 7' long (from muzzle to butt). If straightened out, the cannons and their reservoirs would measure over 30' long. While the cannons weren't permitted at this year's Salt Bowl, they will make appearances at home games and other events, firing t-shirts and any other goodies that might fit in the 3" barrels.

Engineers at Disneyland

While in Anaheim, CA for the VEX Robotics World Championship, our team did have a little time to enjoy Anaheim outside the convention center. Naturally, Disneyland is a must-see. We were fortunate to have Bruce Rauhe, a Disney Imagineer, talk to our students about his extensive work in energy projects in and about Disneyland and its cruise lines. Mr. Rauhe has a background in Chemical Engineering and offered our team some great insights into how the concepts and projects that they are developing now in our program/club can apply to real-world engineering and technology challenges. Thanks, Mr. Rauhe!

Bryant Hornet Engineering Results
Bryant's second visit to the VEX Robotics World Championship was even bigger than the first. 430 high school teams from 26 countries competed alongside Hornet Engineering for a very limited number of spots in the division elimination rounds, and ultimately, the title of VEX Robotics World Champion. 330 other teams competed in elementary, middle school and college divisions.

Our VEX Robotics World Championship team performed well in Anaheim, finishing with a 6-4 record in qualification rounds (actually a 7-3 record, if not for a score-reporting issue that was never appropriately resolved). The Bryant team was a first round pick in alliance selection by the 5th seed team, and made it to the quarter-finals - a first for us. Our team represented BHE well by finishing qualifying rounds with the 5th highest Offensive Performance Rating and 4th highest Calculated Contribution to Winning Margin Rating in our division of 86 teams. It is worth noting that the team was also a runner-up for the Energy Award. Our team learns more about this competition with each visit and we look forward to taking these lessons into next year's season.

Oh, and one of our students won the chance to meet Tony Hawk at the competition.
Just another day in the life of a BHE student.
